It’s the vision of our church and pastor to partner with Hispaniola Mountain Ministries to reach the people of Polo, Dominican Republic. This is a village of nearly 10,000 people. Throughout the year, First Baptist Madison will send 6 or more mission teams to this community to share the love of Christ. Each mission journey will be diverse and can include mission opportunities in the following areas: Medical, Evangelism, Men’s Sports, Construction, Children VBS, Vision Clinics, Discipleship, Leader Training, and Christmas Meals. We will work with the local church, walk through villages, and share the Good News of Christ in Polo. We are very excited about this new partnership and ongoing ministry. Join us in reaching the people of Polo with the love of Christ.

Rice & Beans (Food) $3.50 each
One of the best ways to share the Gospel in Polo is through giving a bag of rice and beans. Each morning, the team fills backpacks with bags of rice and beans and distributes them through the town and the mountainside. One 125 lb. bag of rice provides 26 individual bags and one 100 lb. bag of beans provides 96 individual bags of beans.

Bibles (Fear of the Lord) $5.00 each
Tucked right along with the rice and beans in a team member’s backpack are several copies of the Bible in Spanish. Oh, the stories the team could tell as they saw eager faces holding a Bible for the very first time. Some people could not read, but they still wanted a Bible because they knew a friend or family member who could read it to them. God’s Word says, “so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11). It is the power of God’s Word which transforms lives and it is the Fear of the Lord which produces reverence and awe for God.

Readers/Glasses (Face Countenance) $5.00 each
Team members encountered several individuals who wanted Bibles and had the ability to read, but they needed glasses to be able to truly see the words.  And our prayer is that the people of Polo will be able to see Jesus through the written Word and through the lives of our team members. A simple pair of inexpensive reading glasses allowed a man to see clearly and read the words of the Gospel.  A new countenance came across his face as he read the Word in his native language.

Shoes that Grow (Feet) $15.00 each pair
Standing on the mountain were a group a people who had gathered for Bible study, and our ministry team was reminded of Isaiah 52:7 (NIV) which states, “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” After the Gospel was shared, several of the natives came forward to ask more questions about knowing Christ. At the close of this Bible study, pairs of shoes were given to those attending. “Shoes that Grow” will expand up to five sizes as a child grows. These shoes are an essential item that provides safety and protection from jagged rocks and debris in the mountain area. Your investment in a pair of shoes can last for up to five years.

Christmas Meal (Feast)
Goal: $2000.00, $10.00 donation suggested
In 2018, Pastor Mateo, local missionaries, and others prepared food and served a Christmas meal to the people of Polo at the Christian Baptist Church of Polo and then again on the mountainside. It was a feast for all those who attended. In December 2019, we will have a ministry team going to Polo to help prepare and provide the Christmas Meal. It is a huge undertaking but the opportunity to share the Christmas story and build intentional relationships is beyond measure. It is also a great way to end the year with missions, celebration, and thanksgiving to God for all He has done.

Church Building Project (Foundation) Goal: $60,000, any amount
Rain pelted down on the roof of the small Baptist Church of Polo. It was hard to find a dry spot inside the church, as various leaks found their way from the ceiling to the old green cushions; but the rain did not stop the natives from entering and gathering to hear the Word of the Lord. Currently the building is small and there is not enough room for all the people to have a place to come and participate in worship and teaching. A new building will provide a much larger area, storage space, and rooms for the children to have classes. The land is available for purchase and a construction date is on the calendar.  The church is not comprised of brick and mortar; the church consists of individuals who have placed their faith and trust in Jesus. He is the cornerstone, the foundation. A building provides a place for the family of God to come together, fellowship, and minister to one another.
